Family Upcycling Events: Creating, Connecting & Making Memories
Maybe you’re not into anything fashion and you’d rather take your child to a drop-off session and go to the cafe to drink a matcha latte with your friend. Fair enough. We’re all glad that they exist. That is, the drop-off sessions, not the match latte (oops, sorry).
I usually work with children on their own, but I’ve run many family sessions too. I’ve recently ran one at The Hornbeam Cafe in Walthamstow (London) and here’s what I noticed:
In a world where family life can feel increasingly busy, finding time to simply be together can be more meaningful than we realise.
That’s why I love Family Eco-Fashion Workshops.
They’re not just about making something beautiful to take home. They’re about the time spent sitting side by side, trying some stitches, sharing ideas, making mistakes, laughing, and enjoying the process together. Especially with younger children (4-6 year old), it feels like parents have a magical wand that can make all their (fashion) dreams come true.
Look at this mum who worked alongside her daughter adding sparks to an old broken pair of wings - or the young girl with a huge smile on her face after her mum has turned an old favourite pair of trousers into a brand new bag for her:

Creating alongside our children
There’s something special about parents getting involved in the making, rather than simply watching from the sidelines.
I’ve witnessed parents enjoying family sessions even more than their children!
Making together creates a sense of equality. I've seen parents stressing for not being able to achieve what their child had in mind, and their child taking the pressure off by suggesting something else.
Sometimes, the best part is seeing the world through our children’s eyes.
The importance of slowing down
Upcycling clothes gives us permission to slow down.
There’s no need to rush from one activity to the next. We can sit down, cut a piece of fabric, grab a needle and some thread, use fabric markers or fabric paint, sew a button and simply focus on the slow process.
For children, this slower pace can be especially valuable. It gives them space to concentrate and be curious.
For parents, it can be a welcome reminder that we don’t always need to be productive. Sometimes, being present is enough.

Making a the world a better place, together
Upcycling itself is fun and creative. But the reality is that instead of buying new clothes and creating more waste, you're sharing an important message: we can make the world a better place together.
Those ordinary moments can become the memories that stay with us.
Family upcycling events create opportunities for those moments to happen naturally — without screens, schedules or distractions getting in the way.

More than upcycling
Ultimately, family upcycling events are about much more than the finished creation.
They’re about connection.
They give families a reason to pause, put down their phones, sit together and make something with their hands.
Sometimes, all it takes is a table, some old clothes with a few sewing tools and some time together.
