What Children Really Learn in an Eco-Fashion Workshop

I’ve just concluded my first whole year of eco-fashion clubs in schools, and let me tell you this: kids have learned A LOT, and so have I.

What have children learned in my eco-fashion clubs?

In my eco-fashion clubs, the children have been learning some upcycling techniques, the importance of reusing as well as the ability to see the creative potential in everything. However, a fundamental aspect of turning old clothes into something new, is to be able to sew.

Sewing might look like a simple craft activity, but behind every stitch is a whole range of valuable skills that children use every day.

Threading a needle takes patience and concentration. Following a line of stitches develops hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. Choosing fabrics and colours encourages creativity, while planning a project helps children think ahead and make decisions.

Sewing also teaches resilience. Rarely does everything go perfectly the first time! Being the one to tell them: “don’t give up”, “we can fix this”, “mistakes force you to be more creative!” and seeing their resilience grow, has been so gratifying.

Threads become tangled, stitches need unpicking and ideas evolve as children work. These moments help children understand that mistakes are part of learning and that persistence leads to progress.

Perhaps one of the greatest benefits is confidence. Completing a sewing project gives children a genuine sense of achievement because they've created something real that they can use, wear or proudly take home.

I’ve also been amazed by the impact of teamwork during my eco-fashion clubs, children spontaneously offering to help someone else using a skill they just recently learned!

In a world where so much is instant and disposable, sewing offers children the chance to slow down, focus and experience the satisfaction of making something with their own hands.

It's not just about learning to sew: it's about learning to believe in what they're capable of creating.

To another year of eco-fashion in schools.
